Project Development Solutions / Project Sustainability Strategy

This project development work involves supporting development sector clients in the planning, design, development and implementation of sustainability strategies and initiatives, which includes front end ‘design development’ methodologies and reporting frameworks.

We provide practical support to project teams, facilitating delivery of land and built-environment development solutions that achieve creative design quality are environmentally and socially sustainable and financially viable.

Key areas of service include:

  • Development of a Project Sustainability Strategy with measurable performance indicators

  • Development of project development proposals

  • Development and management sustainability standards and guidelines

  • Supporting project development throughout the project lifecycle – from project inception and visioning, planning approvals, through staged development and implementation to close-out and review

  • Development of project specific consumer focussed information and educational packages and resources

  • Offering project and group process facilitation, including project visioning and design reviews

  • Facilitation of stakeholder and community engagement

The development of a ‘Project Sustainability Strategy’ provides the framework and mechanism to ensure the project achieves the vision and objectives envisioned via an integrated design response. The essential elements of the PSS are underpinned by a governance methodology and reporting framework.

The governance methodology provides an inclusive and genuine engagement process throughout the project lifecycle for all key stakeholders and the project team, whereby all parties are able to establish a common agreement on project goals, vision and objectives, working together to achieve these.

In practical terms, this PSS governance methodology will include a series of facilitated stakeholder workshops and technical working sessions throughout the project lifecycle to find and maintain agreed common values, processes and strategies to achieve the project goals and objectives.

Education for Sustainable Living

ActiveSustainability designs, facilitates and delivers project specific purchaser focussed design workshops and information sessions, educational packages, resources and design guidelines and facilitation of community and purchaser sustainable living workshops.

Education for Sustainable Living is an essential and core linking element for achieving longer term and meaningful outcomes in land and built-form project development, and is an embedded feature of ‘best-practice certification standards.

We recognise that the requirements in the Design Guidelines and the information included will only achieve so much. To achieve meaningful and lasting change, especially for those residents who have interest and willingness to do more, our facilitated behaviour change workshops provide a range of initiatives and interactive activities to help support and facilitate changes in action and behaviour.

The progression of the workshops form a lifecycle approach:

  • beginning with the pre-occupancy design phase of the property and dwelling,

  • progressing to the establishment ‘setting-up and moving-in’ phase where the final fitout of the home and landscaping are undertaken and

  • finishing with the occupancy ‘living-in’ phase which is when the behaviours and habits begin to realty show-up.

These series of interactive and engaging workshops are focussed on explaining, understanding and engaging with the clients and purchasers to support their sustainable living journey.

About EnviroDevelopment

EnviroDevelopment (ED) is the endorsed project sustainability assessment and certification system for the land development sector in Australia.

Developed and managed by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA), it is an independent, voluntary certification system that provides accreditation to land developments that go beyond minimum practice standards and promote more sustainable urban developments. The ED system sets the bar above current practice and targets the top 10-20 percent of green marketed urban development projects.

The ED system addresses performance criteria and certification in six areas, known as Elements: Ecosystem, Water, Energy, Waste, Materials, and Community.

ActiveSustainability has specific knowledge and experience in the application of the ED standards in WA. This includes supporting Clients and Project team in achieving certification on WA development projects.

EnviroDevelopment Certified Projects

All projects listed below have similarities: they are all urban projects, and all were aiming to achieve certification in 4 or more elements (although not all did achieve that objective), and all were delivered within the specified project timeframes.

Philosophy

ActiveSustainability believes that the quality of life for current and future generations depends on the implementation of sustainable business solutions, and all our products and services are designed to achieve this end.

We need a sustainability ethos at the core of all business endeavours and activities.  To create a social and cultural shift in thinking and action, we need a commitment to transformative change.

ActiveSustainability’s principal strength is a passionate belief in the necessity of implementing sustainable solutions in all business endeavours in order to guarantee quality of living for current and future generations.

Our overarching objective is to enable the implementation of a sustainability ethos at the core of all business activities and create a social and cultural shift in thinking and action.

Addressing today’s sustainability challenges require more than strategies and initiatives, it requires deep commitment to transformative change. Therefore, sustainability solutions are found by encouraging new ways of thinking leading to the integration of meaningful action.

“You don’t start with the corporation and ask how to redesign it.  You start with life

— with human life and the life of the planet

— and ask, how do we generate the conditions for life’s flourishing?”

Designed to ensure optimal alignment in thinking and understanding of the client (and their key stakeholders) to the ethos of sustainability.

Conceptualisation

It is critical that the client take ownership of any program strategy and/or project from the earliest stages. Doing so will ensure a stronger input and therefore help create greater certainty of success.

Identifying and applying contextually relevant strategies and initiatives for the organisation, which are aligned to the principles and practices of sustainability and reflective of the wider stakeholder community, are vital to achieve a meaningful outcome.

Collaboration:

Achieving meaningful outcomes requires strong and consistent collaboration, based on a shared understanding of purpose and commitment to change.

Design and Review:

The processes of design inquiry and review are critical to identifying and determining the skills, capabilities and commitment required to achieving meaningful strategies.
